Sheffields Decarbonisation Route Map includes both domectic and commercial dwellings
Thousands of city buildings in Sheffield will have solar panels retrofitted following the announcement of the “Decarbonisation Route Map” which also involves the possible installation of wind energy solutions.
This news comes after Sheffield scraped plans in 2016 to add solar panels to 6000 homes, due to funding cuts.
The new plan has been pushed due to the cities goal to be net zero by 2030. This applies to be domestic and non-domestic properties, as well as street lighting.
Although, as housing in Sheffield currently makes up most of the cities carbon emissions- focus will be on domestic properties. This also means improving the installation of existing homes and making new build homes as energy efficient as possible.
According to the council, there are currently no large-sale wind or ground-mounted solar projects in Sheffield. Therefore, developing large-scale projects is another main objective, alongside increasing renewable energy generation from small-scale systems.
Chair of the transport, regeneration and climate committee, Ben Miskell, said “Delivering renewable energy schemes, such as solar farms, will help us achieve our aim for the city to be net zero by 2030.”
“It is right that we are ambitious in our aim, but we cannot do it on our own, we need urgent action from government to provide more resources to help Sheffield achieve a more prosperous, net zero future for our city.”
