What is a Combi Boiler?
A combi boiler, short for combination boiler, is the most popular type of boiler in the UK, found in approximately seven out of ten households. This compact unit efficiently supplies both heating and hot water on demand, eliminating the need for a separate water storage tank.
Modern A-rated combi boilers offer efficiency levels above 90%, making them not only highly energy-efficient but also space-saving. With these benefits, it’s easy to see why combi boilers have become the leading choice for homes across the UK.
What is a System or Heat Only Boiler?
A system boiler is one which is used in conjunction with a domestic hot water cylinder, whether that be vented or unvented (gravity pressure hot water, or mains pressure hot water).
This type of boiler gives flexibility with the type of system it is paired with and can be used to deliver heat to a multi-zoned heating system. Therefore these are often installed in larger domestic properties.
The difference between System or Heat Only Boilers is small, where the System has a few more internal components than the Heat Only. The appropriate one for you would be determined at the design stage.
What is Unvented Hot Water?
Most people are familiar with a ‘traditional’ type of heating system that has a cylinder somewhere in the property, and a ‘Header tank’ in the loft. These were often quite unsanitary and had poor hot water pressure.
The ‘modern way’ of doing this is with unvented hot water, where the hot water pressure is almost identical to the incoming cold water pressure. These systems are sealed to the atmosphere and do not require any extra storage tanks, other than a small expansion vessel.
Most heat pump systems utilise Unvented hot water, but this form of hot water storage has been used with gas boilers increasingly over the past 40 years.
Heating Design Matters!
We look to design all our heating systems at a lower flow temperature that doesn’t work your boiler as hard, and therefor increases longevity and efficiency.
At Your Energy, our top priority will always be ensuring your home is heated by a system that best suits your needs. Our expert engineers are quite used to fitting air source heat pumps, but when a home does not match the requirements of a pump, we would then advise upgrading to a more efficient gas boiler.
All our surveys and heat loss calculations are done in-house, this means we can accurately design systems to the highest efficiency – which in turn, will also save you money!
